Went in for his 18 month checkup yesterday, and we actually got no shots for the first time, woo! He will have to go in the fall for 2 boosters and a flu shot, but at least he got a checkup without one for once. He’s up to 24.6 pounds and 31 inches tall, he’s hugging that 25% mark for both pretty well. He’s also ahead of average for talking. The dr said average at 18 months is 7-20 words (the parents can understand), and since he’s over 3 dozen already, he’s progressing very well there. Guess all the babbling to him and reading is helping J Overall, it was a good checkup, and he’s right where he needs to be, if not ahead. It’s nice having the dr ask all the developmental and social questions and being able to answer yes to them all lol Apparently “pretend play” at his age is just playing by himself for periods of time (see, I learned something!). He can easily keep himself occupied with the myriad of toys he has for longer periods of time now, which is nice.

We have an appt end of Sept with an allergist to test and get a game plan down for his egg allergy, and hopefully to check on nuts as well. The dr said he recommends waiting until well into his 2nd year before trying eggs again, and waiting until 3 for nuts just because of the other allergy and family history of some food allergies, but said the allergist will be able to give us a better idea, and may have a different recommendation. So we will see what the allergist has to say. Hopefully the testing yields some help as well. Other than all that, not too much else to report. He’s been healthy, progressing well, and can throw a tantrum pretty darn well now. He definitely has his own opinions and will tell you if yours don’t agree with his haha He’s gotten the stomping feet down pretty well now too Take care everyone!

We took Brenden to the fireworks last night, and he had a blast. Last year he was only a few months old and slept through them all (amazing since they are sooo loud). This year we walked around the little festival, jumped around in the bouncy house, and ran all over the grassy area behind where we were sitting. He even got to play ball with the “big kids” that were playing there a little bit. When it finally was time for the fireworks to start (an hour past his bedtime), he was worn down enough that he laid next to us and watched without trying to squirm away. The first big red one that went off he shrieked and giggled at. There was only a couple times he pointed at one of his ears, so I covered it and he went on giggling and going aaaahhhhhh at the fireworks lol Was too funny.

As a side note I’ve updated his baby album (some pics are pretty old, so I’ve put them all at the front of the album for now instead of sticking them chronologically so they are easy to find.

Well it’s been quite awhile since I’ve posted an update, never seem to have any time anymore. I’m woefully behind on posting pictures as well I know. Last time I updated was just before Christmas (with pics too). Let’s see where to start.

His first Christmas he wasn’t sure what was going on, wasn’t terribly interested in presents. He was more interested in walking along the furniture lol By the time his 1st birthday hit though, he was a riot. As soon as he saw the toys being unwrapped, he had to look and play with every one of them (well that he could, most stayed boxed until we got home lol). His 1st birthday was definitely a bit of a trial, as he was sick with a 103+ fever for several days before until several days after his party, and wouldn’t let me put him down at all. Even when he was sleeping, the second I put him down he woke up shrieking. So needless to say the cake didn’t turn out nearly like I had planned, but what are you going to do? I think we ended up with version 3 or 4 Luckily the Motrin had kicked in and dropped his fever for a 2 hour window around when we did presents, which helped him be in such a good mood for them. All in all it was a great day, and at some point I will get around to getting pictures posted. I also lost my hard drive, so have lost 6 months worth of dates, pics, and videos, so have had to regather his birthday pics from the people that took them (thankfully I was so busy with him that day everyone else was taking the pictures). Sadly it also means I don’t have tons of other pictures from between October and April either, but at least he’s not changing quite as quickly as he did at the beginning.

Since his birthday he’s starting walking. And running. And now climbing. He’s been able to climb onto the couch for about a month now, and over this last weekend figured out he could climb out of the pack n play (he hooked his arms over the side and held on while he walked his feet up the side and pushed himself over). I saw him just as he was doing it and caught him as he started to fall over the top (that was a heart attack). Last night he tried climbing out of the crib too. Thankfully I was in there with him so I could keep him down. Not that I’m surprised he’s a climber really, but I guess I wasn’t expecting the agility to be able to so well quite this soon.

I’m also working on a list of words Brenden knows, but I think he’s somewhere around a dozen right now. Last week he added no (oooooh joy) and byby to the list. It’s still new enough that it sounds SO cute when he says no, but I’m sure it won’t take terribly long for the cuteness to fade He also figured out how to spin himself in circles to make himself dizzy a few weeks ago, and will bounce up and down and clap to dance with the tv. He also loves books, and will bring daddy and I books, and climb up in our lap so we can read to him. The little boy also loves the water, swim classes were definitely a good call, as he isn’t afraid to be in the water and get splashed or anything.

We’ve hit some bumps along the way of course. He’s been sick quite a bit (mostly over the winter). We were hoping with summer it would clear up, but in May he started out with pneumonia, and ended with bronchiolitis. So he’s been on antibiotics, as well as steroids and an inhaler. Having the bronchiolitis means an increased chance of asthma as well. The dr. thinks it may be in part due to allergies, and the little guy is definitely stuffy a lot, and has itchy eyes a decent amount right now. With my allergies, I wouldn’t be surprised either, poor thing.

All in all, I just can’t believe how quickly he seems to be “growing up”. They always say how fast the time goes, and I expected time to go quickly, I guess I just wasn’t prepared for how soon he would progress. They really are only a true baby for a few months. I was expecting him to stay in the “baby” phase longer I guess, but he’s well into toddler now. Running, starting to talk, climbing, trying to use silverware himself. Just amazes me. I think that’s a pretty fair update. Once I can salvage pictures (and find some time to go through them when the little guy is asleep and I’m not chasing him), I will try and get the gallery up to date as well.

10 month update!! I know I know, still haven’t gotten new pictures up in a long time, but we always seem to be busy, especially when he’s up. Where to start? Well we’ve had a lot of bugs the last couple months, the last one was particularly bad and hit all of us, plus a few from outside the household due to Thanksgiving and Cookie Day (sorry guys!). Lasted a good 3 miserable weeks, and Brenden finally ended up with antibiotics, which kicked most of it. We are still dealing with a rash on the poor little guy that’s been there over 2 weeks now and makes him miserable. He’s constantly scratching and I can’t tell you how many little cuts he has on his head and forehead from it. The dr said it’s normal and mostly due to the dry winter weather most likely, so we aren’t to use any soap during the winter, and only give him baths twice a week to prevent his skin from drying out any further (baby skin is sure different from adults that’s for sure). Typical, he loves bath time now that he can sit up on his own and splash around, so now we have to cut back on them lol

At the dr this week he weighed in at 19.5 pounds. I thought he was about that 2 months ago, and he may have been. His appetite is still lackluster after the 3 week bug we just got over, and he isn’t eating as much as he was before he was sick yet, so wouldn’t surprise me if he lost a little weight being sick. But he has moved on to feeding himself cheerios and these little rice puffs, and at daycare yesterday ate half of a canned pear. We’ve also started giving him some of the 3 foods which have some chunks of veggies in them, so he’s moving along. A little slower than some perhaps, but until a week or so ago he was still gagging on cheerios enough that we figured waiting until he was good with those would be best before we start giving him more table foods. That and being sick has put his appetite on hold a bit, so he hasn’t moved much forward lately. He has had some of the meats mixed with fruits and veggies and doesn’t seem to mind those either. The only thing he hasn’t really cared for so far is the 3rd foods chicken noodle, but it did taste pretty nasty so I don’t blame him.

It feels like he has another tooth coming in (this one on the top), so that will make 3. He’s gotten sitting and crawling down pat and has started pulling himself up on anything he can now, and loves to walk with you holding his hands, so we’re guessing Christmas or soon thereafter he will start walking (I know a far cry from the rolling around he had just started doing 2 months ago). Still amazes me how quickly they start doing new things sometimes. He’s also started climbing over and on me, so as we could have predicted from while I was carrying him, think he’s going to be a climber ;) Took our first plane ride with him out to California last month to visit Kelli (had a great time too, very relaxing and was so good to see her again.. we love you Kelli!), and he was better than we could have hoped on all the plane rides. On the way out since it was after work and later at night, he slept all the way through both. On the way back he slept through half the long one, so was awake about 1.5 hours. Took both of us and half a dozen toys to keep him amused, and he still got whiny at the end since we had to sit on the tarmac awhile. Then he slept through the short flight again though, so all in all he was great. We had lots of compliments on how good he was on the planes. And while we were out there, he said mama a few times, so that was awesome :) Hasn’t said it much since we got home though lol But I had lots of witnesses, so it wasn’t me hearing things ;)

I think I’ve hit the big things, I can never remember, so many things change it seems like and so quickly. At some point I really do need to update pictures, he’s changed so much from the 6.5 month ones we have in the album. Here it is almost Christmas time and I don’t even have Halloween up yet. Ugh. Well until next time (which will probably be his 1 year, yikes!!! Need to get planning on that lol), take care all and have a Merry Christmas!!

Wow, 8 months already. Can’t believe how fast the time is going. We’ve had a few emergency trips to the doctor here and there over the past couple months, some bugs, infections, etc, most he got from daycare I’m sure, nothing out of the ordinary for his first year though. Doctor said to expect him to get sick at least 3-4 times his first winter, and he’s well on his way. Daddy seems to have gotten around most of what he’s caught, but I’m not so lucky (not a terrible surprise, I’m almost always down with a sinus infection or something in the fall anyway). But nothing serious, just normal baby stuff. So on to what’s new.

He’s gotten adept at rolling to where he wants to be, and can get across the room in a matter of seconds if he really wants to. He’s trying really hard to get those knees and hands under him at the same time, but more often than not, he will push one arm further than the other and just topples back to his back. He’s moving his hips up and down a lot, I think in the effort to get up and moving, but who knows, could just be because he can and it helps him flip around quicker too. That and he still kicks ALL the time lol This boy just LOVES standing too, has since he was a few months old, but he would rather stand than sit (which he has gotten pretty good at, when he’s not flinging himself backwards hah), so the saucer we got was definitely worth the money (and it’s a good place for him when we need to get stuff done so we can take our eyes off him for a second lol). I wouldn’t be surprised if when he does crawl it’s short lived (or he skips it altogether) and he moves quickly to pulling himself up to stand. He’s also passing things from hand to hand, and his depth perception is pretty good when you hold something in front of him to grab it. He will carefully reach out and usually he gets it the first time (so cute when he will very carefully reach and grab both ends of toys sometimes).

His vocabulary is getting so big, he makes SO many new noises all the time. One night about a month ago he started crying in the middle of the night and he sounded just like a mountain lion. I started laughing and took him into daddy so he could hear too. Poor guy is crying for a bottle and we’re laughing because he sounds so funny. He also has a whimper, almost like a puppy, which he will normally do when he wants something, but every once in awhile he will just do while he’s smiling on the floor lol He is definitely making a lot of the typical baby squealing type noises now, and so loud, it’s great though. He’s always such a happy little guy.

Well nothing has changed in the food department, the little guy loves eating. “little”, he’s into 9 month clothes already, and I’m pretty sure we need to get him an 18 month snow suit to have a shot at making it through the winter without buying a second. He’s definitely going to need 12 month clothes for winter, and I’m sure will be close to growing out of those shortly after Christmas at the rate he’s going (he must be around 20 pounds by now). We are up to 3 times a day (don’t recall when we hit that, might have been at 6 months actually, shortly thereafter if not), and we haven’t found anything he won’t eat yet (even his greens and pineapple). He opens wide and impatiently when you are getting another spoonful ready for him. He still talks while he eats the majority of the time, but not all the time like when he started. He has started reaching for our food a lot (and his own), so last week we cut up some banana slices really thin so he could try on his own. Of course then he wouldn’t touch them, but they are pretty slippery. He did take them from me though, made the weirdest face when he got them in his mouth though, like wth IS this?? But he ate them, which I guess can often be a hurdle going from baby foods to the real ones because of the textures.

And as of a few weeks ago, we have 2 teeth! Last week we put him in a high chair when we were out for the first time (good thing we had the padded liner though, since he still tries sliding down in it). Last week he also started grabbing his bottles from me (not just to play with), and more often than not wants to feed himself his bottles now. Being a mom it has pluses and minuses, it’s great he can do it himself, especially since he always wants to eat when I’m trying to make dinner or eating, but part of me will miss the bonding time we had too. At least his last bottle of the night is usually after he’s been asleep for a few hours, so he’s mostly asleep and I still get to do that one. Usually if we get him to take the last bottle right before I go to bed, he will sleep until I’m up for work in the morning, so things have come a long way and it’s nice to actually get more than a few hours of sleep in a row. He will sometimes still wake up middle of the night, but if I need to get up at all, it’s usually just to flip him out of whatever weird position he’s gotten into that woke him up, and he’ll go right back to sleep. His new favorite sleeping position is on his tummy (far cry from the screaming he used to do when you tried putting him on his tummy), very often with his knees under him and his butt stuck up in the air.

Whew, I think I hit most the highlights (nothing like writing a book every couple months lol). We go in for a flu shot tomorrow, and just had his 8 month pictures done at the studio last weekend, so will post them when I get them. I also am woefully behind on posting new pictures at all here I know (think the last ones were at 6.5 months), so will try getting to them in the next week as well. We got him a dragon costume for Halloween, and the studio pictures we had a couple done in costume, so we will have some pictures of his costume for sure. Well, I think that’s about it (until I post, when I’m sure I’ll think of something else lol). Take care all!

Sat because he had been pulling on his ears the past couple days and developed a fever overnight Friday. We were going up to watch Uncle Jim play in his state softball tournament but spent the morning at the dr. instead. He didn’t have an ear infection, but has some sort of respiratory virus (which I have now as well, but I can’t be too surprised since he likes sticking those fingers in my mouth that he’s been sucking on). Sunday afternoon he started screaming anytime he was awake (badly constipated on top of the virus), which lasted through until Monday night. Thankfully Monday that broke along with his fever, so we are down to the stuffy head, coughing and sneezing. Hopefully that goes away before he goes in Monday for his vaccinations, would hate to add those on top of what he has already.

Since he’s been sick, we haven’t tried any new foods lately. We tried the bananas but he got sick the next day, so we’re not sure if it was them or not and are going to wait a little longer before we try them again. He also wasn’t fond of the applesauce (which is weird since he gets apple juice in his cereal and got some mixed with water Monday that he liked really well). It was also right before he got the virus, so we will try those again later as well. He’s still young, so there’s no hurry anyway and we’re waiting until he feels himself again before we start throwing new foods at him again. At least he’s back to eating solids again as of the last couple days.

He’s not quite sitting up on his own yet, but he’s getting really close. He’s started flipping over to his tummy a lot this week too, but then gets cranky when he’s there lol Last night he almost looked like he was going to get on his knees, but I think it was a fluke position he got into when he rolled over, but I’m sure it won’t be long before he starts getting up on those hands and knees, since he’s so close to sitting on his own. Then before you know we’ll really have to watch him lol He still LOVES those feet and is getting close to getting them into his mouth (along with everything else he can get his hands on). And he seems fascinated with hair right now. When he was little he would grab it when it brushed his hands, but now he reaches for it and grabs on purpose. When he’s on the changing table he will stare at it and reach up to touch and just has a look of “what IS this” on his face, and most any time I’m carrying him he will grab onto it as well. Tying it back doesn’t help any, as he’s very adept at grabbing the roots, so it hurts less if it’s not pulled back to begin with.

Well it’s only been a couple weeks since I posted last, so there’s not a lot new to post, but since he’s turning 6 months old today I figured I should post something. Now if only he and I weren’t sick it might even be more fun ;) But who am I kidding, he’s mostly in a good mood even when he’s sick (now that his tummy isn’t ready to explode and his head isn’t a furnace). And it’s worth noting the horrible new noise he had just learned last time I posted only lasted about a week and I haven’t actually heard him make it in over a week now. He definitely is getting a vocabulary on him now, if only we knew what his “words” meant hah Soon enough I’m sure. Oh, I have also posted some of the scanned in pictures we got, so take a look.

Since I haven’t updated our page for awhile after Brenden surprised us all with his early and rather startling arrival, and since he’s approaching his 6 month birthday (only a couple more weeks!), I figured I should give some highlights. Last week (just past 5 months) he weighed in at 15 lbs, 2 oz, and is up to 25 inches long. As he approaches his 6 month birthday, he’s also approaching wearing 6-9 month clothes, so he’s definitely caught up in a hurry as he isn’t lagging anymore size wise. Hard to believe in the last 5 months he’s already gone through 3 sizes of clothes and is about to outgrow the 4th lol He’s the happiest baby I’ve ever seen, and smiles all the time. We’ve got him giggling now and then now too, and it’s the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard and will make me dissolve into giggles of my own if we can get him doing it long enough. They start off sounding a little like coughing, but then it turns into a giggle. He discovered a new noise he can make last weekend though that will grate your nerves. It’s a half screechy/half whiny sound he will make normally when he’s playing by himself, and we’re hoping he tires of it soon. At least he seems to be starting to work it in with his other (MUCH CUTER) noises now, so at least it’s not constant like when he first discovered it.

His current fixation is trying to sit up (I attribute that to that little girlfriend of his at daycare hah). And his most recent discovery is his feet. He’ll roll all over the place trying to keep a hold of those little toes of his. He’s a strong little guy and has gotten very good at holding himself upright; I don’t think it will be long before he’s sitting up all on his own (he’s good at playing airplane). After that it probably won’t be too long until he’s crawling around either. My bet is he’ll be after the dog like a shot when he can move around, since he gets the biggest smiles when she walks by him and he’ll twist all over trying to keep watching her as she’s walking around the room. He lights up whenever he sees daddy too (you can tell he knows daddy means play and tickle time), but still prefers mommy when he needs comforting (which mommy doesn’t mind in the least).

Let’s see what else. He’s been eating cereal for about a month now (mixed with formula and apple juice), and has gotten really good at it (that’s not just a proud parent saying it either, the lady at daycare was remarking he was really good at it as well, especially since it’s a learned rather than instinctual skill). He barely gets any pushed back out of his mouth while he’s chewing and swallowing anymore. Last week we tried squash, but he wasn’t real big on that, so we tried pears this week and he seems to enjoy those a lot. You could tell those brain cells were working trying to figure out that texture the first time he had them haha Maybe next we’ll try bananas since they seem to mix those with a lot of other fruits, so that will give us even more options early on.

Last night we had our first portrait session for pictures and it was a lot of fun. They made sure at daycare that he had a bottle about 30 minutes before I picked him up so he was nice and full. He seems to have decided most days he’s only going to nap about 2.5 hours instead of his previous 4+, so he hadn’t napped in awhile, but he was very good at the studio. You could tell by the end he was getting tired though, rubbing his eyes and just getting really fidgety, but we got a lot of cute shots. At least we got them before those teeth come in so we have some really cute toothless baby pictures ^^ After a few minutes of crying when we were done, he settled down for a nap so I was luckily able to go through and get the order done up without feeling rushed, and we get them in 2 weeks. It was hard getting shots without that hand in his mouth though. Since he’s starting to teethe (you can feel hard ridges, but nothing has popped yet and I’ve been told it can take a couple days or months even after you feel that for them to pop out), he always is chewing on something, very often his hand. There were a couple times parts of the set at the studio made their way into his mouth as well

I think that should pretty well catch us up to date. I know it’s been awhile since I’ve posted new pictures too, but we’ve been battling some skin issues and lots and lots of scratching the past few weeks, so I haven’t taken as many as normal. We finally seem to have most of the irritation under control and his scratches have healed up and he isn’t making constant new ones, so expect more pictures again soon. I will also see if I can get the studio pictures scanned in when they come in and post at least a couple of those as well. Take care all!

I never did get around to posting here that we were expecting. Things seemed to happen fairly quickly, even though we had been trying for awhile. We found out the morning of July 4th 2007 that I was pregnant. First part of pregnancy wasn’t too bad, a little bit of morning sickness, but nothing out of the ordinary. Second trimester hit and I still couldn’t stomach eating though. It wasn’t normal morning sickness, as that would have been nausea and typically would have been gone by now anyway. After another 2 months of not being able to eat hardly anything (and having lost about 15 pounds by that time), the doctor determined it was my prenatal that was making me have such a strong food aversion. So we switched over to a different vitamin and the next couple months were great. In October we had our Ultrasound and found out we were having a little boy. I felt wonderful and could actually stomach eating again, though having gone so long without eating much, I couldn’t stand to feel overly full, and with so little room in my stomach with the baby growing, I still wasn’t eating a whole lot. But I was pretty much maintaining my weight by that point and the doctors weren’t overly concerned, so neither were we.

The week after my shower in January, however, things turned a corner and quickly. The day after my shower I woke up with the baby having crawled under my ribs and completely above my belly button. After awhile he was finally coaxed down, but after that I was in a lot of pain. We thought it was due to him climbing up so often, as that wasn’t the last time, though it was the only time he was completely above my belly button. I went to the doctor since we were concerned about just how severe the pain was, but he did some checking and at the time my BP was still ok (they had been monitoring me for pre-eclampsia since mom had it), and nothing indicated any problems with my heart. So the doctor told me to go ahead and take Tylenol for the pain.

Things never got better, just decidedly worse in the next 2 weeks. The pain in my chest was so bad that even taking as much Tylenol as I was allowed, it barely kept the edge off, and I couldn’t breath because it hurt so bad. On top of that, I was starting to swell pretty badly. By the time my next appointment came around on Feb 8th, I had gained 20 pounds in the last 2 weeks due to water retention. My BP was 186/100 and my protein count was 3+ (none is good). The dr. sent us up to the hospital and they were going to put me on BP meds and monitor me for 24 hours to see how I responded. After doing some other testing when we got there, they determined that not only was I suffering from severe pre-eclampsia, but HELLP syndrome as well (a rare condition that can occur with severe pre-eclampsia). It means that your red blood cells are being destroyed, the liver is failing causing the enzymes to elevate, and the blood platelet count is dropping. After seeing I wasn’t responding to the BP meds, they were initially going to get me ready to induce at the end of the weekend. After the other test results came back and my platelet levels, etc were determined, they decided we couldn’t wait that long, as they weren’t sure I would make it through normal delivery or surgery without bleeding out if we waited any longer.

Things became a blur after that, as things moved so quickly. We had only been there a few hours and I was being asked to sign tons of forms and being prepped for surgery. Needless to say panic was definitely there, since it was still 5 weeks before my due date. I was so swelled that it took them 5 tries and 3 different people before they could find a vein for the IV (usually they don’t have problems finding veins on me either), and it took several tries and doses of meds in my spine before I couldn’t feel anything and they could start surgery. It was very unnerving knowing I was going to be awake while they cut me open and took out the baby. All I can say is thank God Chris was there and not out of town for work or I think I would have lost it completely, everything was so overwhelming. I started blacking out when they took the baby out and his cry sounded like it was miles away, as my hearing became so distant. I came back from it though, only to have the dry heaves while they were sewing me up, and Chris telling me the baby was fine.

I told Chris to go with the baby as they had to do a bunch of tests since he was so early. Thankfully, we were extremely lucky and despite him being 5 weeks early, he didn’t need any NICU care. His lungs and everything were fully developed; he was just tiny, 4 lbs 13 oz, but 18 inches long, making him a scrawny little thing, but beautiful. The next few days were a blur to me, as they had to put me on magnesium for 24 hours to help prevent me from having a stroke or seizure. On top of the surgery, the mag makes you feel like you have the flu, and you aren’t allowed to eat or drink anything either, just a few ice chips every couple hours. Both families were allowed to come up the next day, but I recall very little about everyone being there, just that they were there mainly, I was so out of it from the surgery and all the meds. I do remember the first time they got me out of bed after surgery being the most painful thing I’ve ever had to endure, and it took 2 nurses to help me out of bed I was in so much pain and so weak. Since we were planning on finishing the shopping and nursery that weekend, Chris was scurrying around getting the nursery done and the things we needed to bring him home from the hospital (including a bunch of preemie clothes) when he wasn’t at the hospital. We were in the hospital 6 days all told. Brenden was ok, but my BP was so high we were there an extra day.

Feb 13th we were both given the clear to go home finally. Brenden was at 4 lbs 5 oz when we left the hospital, having lost weight as most babies do right after birth. We had to take him in every day for the first few days and then once a week for a couple more just to do weight checks to make sure he was gaining ok. I was put on a lot of restrictions, the only thing I was ok to do was take care of the baby. I couldn’t lift anything heavier than him either for 6 weeks. It was a good thing Chris had been cleared to take 2 months of leave with us, since I definitely depended on him a lot those first few weeks. It took about a month for my BP to go back to normal so I could go off the meds and for the swelling to go down. All told I lost about 30 pounds being pregnant lol But all in all, what matters most is we are both home now and he’s growing by leaps and bounds (Sunday at ~14 weeks he measured at 12 lbs, a far cry from the little bundle we brought home) and doesn’t appear to be lagging in development either as so many preemies do, most likely because he was healthy when he was born. He’s started being full of smiles now and has figured out he can kick and will just lie in his bassinet or on the changing table kicking and “talking”. So there’s our story, a little more dramatic than we would have liked, but now that it’s over, it does make for a good story to tell since everyone came through it fine

About 1.5 weeks ago I was getting ready for bed a little early one night, so I let the dog out, per our normal routine, and a few minutes later I heard her racing around on the deck. We have plenty of cats that prowl the neighborhood, plus the momma bunny, so I ran and opened the door to see what she was up to. As I opened the door, something whizzed by it, and I slammed the door shut so whatever it was didn’t come in the house (I figured that’s all I needed). So great, she’s tossing around some critter (looked like a cat when it flew past) on the porch. I opened the window to see if I could yell at her to stop (ya right) and see what was going on when I smelled it. You guessed it, our not so friendly neighborhood skunk. Great.. So she’s tossing around a skunk, who knows what it’s carrying (she has her rabies shots, but who knows what else it could have) and I can’t open the back door because I don’t know where it is and I sure as hell don’t want that thing IN my house.

So I run to the front door, grabbing my shoes on as I go, run around back and let myself in through the back fence gate, figuring coming from that angle at least I can see what’s going on. She runs over to me so overjoyed with herself, and smelling absolutely horrid (along with the deck and the back of the house). No skunk in sight, so I take her straight into the bathroom, check her for any signs of scratches or bite marks, but luckily she appears completely unhurt, just smellier than anything I’ve been that close to before lol She lost her “I’m so proud of myself” grin when I plunked her in the tub though. One bath down, she still smells a bit, Chris happens to call and I have him look up some deskunking recipes online for me (why is he not home during her hyjinx??). Just as an FYI, tomato juice doesn’t do much but dye their coat red and mask the odor; apparently it doesn’t actually get rid of it.

Recipe in mind (in case I can’t find a decent shampoo, since the puppy stuff obviously isn’t going to cut it), I toss her in her crate (she’s still not going to traipse through my house, now she smells faintly of skunk AND is wet), and head off to the store at midnight, hoping to find something at the 1 grocery store I know is open. They had some “strong pet odor” stuff I bought, along with the peroxide and baking soda in case that didn’t work. Got back home and prepared for bath #2 (by now she is the most pathetic, sad sight you have ever seen, wondering what she could possibly have done to deserve my wrath.. 2 baths in one night, the torture!). Since I was at least able to determine where the smell was still coming from, at least on this attempt I was able to just do those areas. Of course it was her face and chest, so my only choice was the new shampoo (no peroxide by a puppy face please!). Luckily it seemed to have worked for the most part; at least it made it faint enough you couldn’t smell it unless you were up close to her.

Off to bed we finally go, now it’s sometime around 130 I think. She’s definitely sleeping in her crate, there’s no way a wet, possibly still skunky, dog is sleeping on our bed. Of course she also hasn’t been crated overnight at home in a good year now and has just gotten done surviving 2 baths. I have never ever heard such loud and pitiful crying in my life. I think I fell asleep somewhere around 2am and was woken up around 6am and couldn’t fall back asleep. Which was just as well. I did after all have to go to Wal-Mart to buy a replacement collar and harness so I could let her out to do her business. I still haven’t gotten the smell out of her tags and have scrubbed them with scalding water and dish soap, I may just need to get replacements, we will see. Luckily we had enough rain overnight the first night so that the deck and backyard don’t smell of skunk anymore, though the garage still did a bit where it leaked around the door and couldn’t get washed out of the air by the rain. But at least I was able to leave the windows open to get the skunk smell out of the kitchen (amazing how much gets in just from coming in the door once) and from the bathroom.

A week and a half and several rain storms later, I went to the pet store to get some shampoo actually made for getting rid of the skunk smell, as she still has some of it, and with each rain storm it seems to get a little stronger. At least that seems to be getting the rest of it out, and doesn’t require a bath (though when it’s gone she will get another one). Then, last night when I went to let her in before bed, I could tell she was digging at something on the ground and had something in her mouth. After getting her in and spending several minutes telling her to drop it, she finally did. Wasn’t quite what I expected (though I really never know what to expect from her), it was the fattest caterpillar (I think anyway, could have been an enormous grub too) I have seen. Covered in dirt (whether from her digging it out of the ground or just rolling it in the mud I have no idea), curled up in a ball, and at least Chris was home to toss it back outside as I held the dog to keep her from trying to eat it again. But at least it wasn’t a skunk. So what have we learned? Make the dog “drop it” outside on the deck, not after she comes in, and I hate letting her out at night period >.<

Two weekends ago with it being so nice outside, I let Atari run loose in the back yard. I’ve started doing this more often, in the hopes that she will start coming in when called when she’s out loose if she gets to do it more frequently and doesn’t see it as a special thing where she needs to try and squeeze every possible minute outside that she can. So far it’s been working fairly well (although she’s still fenced in too), especially if you open the pnut butter jar while standing on the back porch Anyway, she had been outside for awhile, and when I went to check on her she was just sitting and panting in the brush pile next to our fence. A little while earlier when I had looked outside, she was pulling sticks out of the pile, nothing too out of the ordinary, she loves playing with them. However since it was now a good 10 or more minutes later and she was just sitting there, I knew something was up.

So I grabbed my shoes and trekked out to the pile to see what she’d been digging at. Lo and behold, under the part of the pile she hadn’t managed to dismantle yet, sat a huddled little baby bunny, so young his eyes weren’t open yet. I didn’t see any other little fuzzies lying about, so she hadn’t managed to get to any of them, and only the one was unburied from its nest (it must have been the adventurous one). Just behind it there was a small pile of leaves with some tufts of bunny fur mixed in, so the others were still buried in the nest. Suffice it to say, she hasn’t been out free the last couple weeks without some supervision, I want them to at least be able to flee properly before we let her free again lol

Last week during one of my checks to see if I could see them yet, I did see 2 little faces peering out from under the leaf/fur pile, and there eyes were open ^.^ Then 2 days ago when I was on my way to visit with some friends, Chris called to tell me one of them had fallen into one of the wells along the house and couldn’t get out. So they are definitely out and about a bit now and soooo small still. I am definitely jealous he got to be the one to rescue it from the window well. I did make him take pictures for me, since the only ones I have been able to get so far, it’s hard to see them hiding amongst the brush (but I will post what I have anyway).
